What is Mediation?

Mediation is a method of conflict resolution that aims to assist people involved in a disagreement to reach a mutually acceptable solution - with the help of a neutral independent third party: the mediator.

The main principles of mediation

  • Voluntary
  • Confidential
  • Mediator is impartial and independent
  • Everyone is looking for a 'win-win' solution
  • Any agreement reached belongs to the people who make it
  • Taking part in mediation does not affect your legal rights

Mediation is a flexible process which can change to suit the needs of the people involved but the following is a guide to what you could expect:

Step 1 Separate first meetings with people involved in the disagreement to listen to their views about the situation.
Step 2Clarifying the issues and preparation for a face-to-face meeting. This step usually involves separate second meetings with all those involved.
Step 3Face-to-face mediation in a venue acceptable to everyone. The mediator facilitates an exchange of views - everyone will have an opportunity to have their say, listen to the other person's point of view and explore the issues and options.
Step 4Building agreements and strategies for improving working relationships in the future
Step 5Close and follow up.
